With a soldered rim, the rim is a solid piece of brass meaning that you can file further and if needed, even replace the tonehole rim entirely.Įvery Shadow tenor we send out to a customer is not released from us unless it has been completely setup in our shop first. With a rolled tonehole, there is a finite limit to how much filing can be performed before you break through the roll. When you have a damaged tonehole, technicians will use a file to attempt to make the tonehole surface flat again. However, the rolled tonehole has 1 major draw back… repair. The rolled tone hole gave much of the same performance as the modern soldered rim tone hole used today. Many years ago, Keilwerth used to perform a “rolled tonehole”. This helps to add mass to the horn in a way that increases the tonal depth of the horn while not increasing the resistance. Keilwerth then solders on a solid brass rim to create the tonehole surface. In this setup, the tonehole is manufactured first like other traditional “straight” tone holes. The Keilweth Shadow Tenor utilizes a “Soldered Rim” tonehole. The keys are silver plated and equipped with black pearls and black pads. The Shadow Tenor has the tubing plated with black nickel and deluxe hand engraved. Many people find this horn to be more flexible for jazz, rock & pop style playing. The nickel-silver used on this design gives the horn a little brighter sound but also provides a more vibrant response. The name “nickel-silver” is due to the metal’s appearance being lighter in color than nickel but not quite as light as silver. Nickel-silver is an alloy comprised of 60% copper, 20% nickel & 20% zinc (regular brass is 70% copper and 30% zinc).

Instead of brass, the Shadow Tenor is made from solid nickel-silver. The Shadow Tenor is an SX90R design with the major change of the material used in the tube (neck, body, bow & bell) construction. Handmade in Germany using old world craftsman styles, the Keilwerth SX90R is one of the most impressive performing professional saxophones on the market today! The SX90R uses the most unique bore which produces a sound with more tonal presence than many tenor saxophones produce! Featuring advanced key mechanisms like the G# lifter and adjustable palm keys, the SX90R is set apart.
